Join Brian Sanders and members of the company with special guest teacher, Joe Kerner in our 3rd annual Summer Intensive. Learn JUNK’s creative style and techniques with apparatuses,  aerial work, partnering and specialty class. Each day will include: warm up and conditioning designed to develop skill sets needed for today’s diverse performer; studies with JUNK’s unique apparatus and aerial repertoire used to gain strength, flexibility and technique; and, a specialty class whose studies will form the creative basis in the development of new material.

This year’s specialty class is lead by Joe Kerner, an award winning champion Hustle Dance Specialist  from Philadelphia who has been performing, competing and teaching for over 20 years. Within this class you will have the chance to work with members of the company, studying material and the creative development process for new choreographic concepts that will be the basis for the company’s production this fall.

It is suggested to bring sneakers and knee pads. Please wear form fitting non-slippery clothing that allows for freedom of movement.

Space is limited. Content will be adjusted to individual capacity.

JUNK, Founded by the renowned choreographer Brian Sanders in 1992, the Philadelphia based critically acclaimed company catapulted into the mainstream from a start in the Philadelphia FringeArts Festival. Sanders’ signature style of creating inventive, off-the-wall choreography with found objects and other discarded debris gave way to the troupe’s name, JUNK.

Now offering a regular season that includes a run during the Philadelphia FringeArts Festival, the madcap winter escape party SNOWBALL, as well as national touring and special events throughout the region the company is continuing its programmatic expansion. Recent accolades includes advancing to the semi-finals on the second season of TruTV’ spectacle-filled reality competition “Fake Off” and a performance recently featured for MAC Cosmetics in Dubai UAE. Joe Kerner, a Hustle Dance Specialist from Philadelphia, has been performing, competing and teaching for over 20 years.  Joe has studied a variety of partner dance styles since 1989, including a mixture of club, social and ballroom dances along with training in ballet, jazz and hip hop. He is a 4-time International Hustle Dance Champion at IHSC, 3-time Disco America Champion, World Hustle, MADjam, Swing Dance America, Hustle Congress and Hustle USA Champion. Under the direction of dance legend Arte Phillips, Joe was the dance captain of Philadelphia’s celebrated dance troupes “The Philly Dance Connection” and “The Hustlefactor”.  In 2009, Joe and his partner Stephanie Risser went undefeated earning five – 1st place titles in the Pro Hustle Division.  When not performing or playing soccer, Joe enjoys teaching his unique style of hustle out of Top Hat Studio’s northeast location in Philadelphia and at competitions across the country. Joe is excited to work with JUNK and have the opportunity to cross paths with new faces to his world and style of dance at the workshops.

Brian Sanders, reckless fun as a child was easily channeled once Sanders found his love for gymnastics and classical dance. A graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Brian Sanders was invited to join the internationally celebrated dance illusionist company MOMIX, where for ten years he choreographed and performed with the company worldwide. Sanders has gone on to perform and choreograph on the national and international stage for a variety of dance programs, on television, and in video. In Italy, Brian choreographed two nationally televised miniseries for Rai Uno and choreographed the national touring show, NOGRAVITY, which was performed as part of the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Torino. Recent choreographic acclaims for Sanders include a Pennsylvania Ballet commission for its 2016-2017 season, the inspiration of a visit to a singular performance by JUNK during the Philadelphia FringeArts Festival in 2015 by the Ballet’s Artistic Director, Angel Corella.
